ABOUT US

The African Village was formed 25yrs ago with the vision to help women in the villages that were struggling hard to raise their families by selling Kyondo ( Kenyan basket).  A small movement called ” kanini kaseo” was formed by kamba women in yatta division to  uplift each other financially by doing monthly contributions where everyone had a turn to get the contribution when their turn comes, and this would help to buy raw material to make the baskets.

We started out by buying these baskets in small quantities from these women my grandma being one of them as they made them and would sell them at Karioko market ( Kenya’s largest kyondo/ basket now) to mostly tourists and some local residents. With time we were able to get more customers which meant asking the women to make more baskets, and within a few years we were able to open a shop in Nairobi.
